Crystal’s $97 grocery purchases this week

If you’re new here, I practice the Buy Ahead Principle — which means that what we buy each week is often for future weeks. We stock up on the best deals and markdowns each week and that means that we then have a variety of items from previous shopping trips to use to plan a menu from.

With the increase in grocery prices, I’ve decided to raise our grocery budget to $100 a week because I’ve not been having enough wiggle room to stock up like I’d want to. This amount will still challenge me to be creative while also giving me enough breathing room to stock up and continue to practice the Buy Ahead Principle.

In addition to practicing the Buy Ahead Principle, I Reverse Meal Plan. This means that I plan based upon what we have on hand plus what good sales/markdowns I found at the stores. (Read more about Reverse Meal-Planning here.)

I was excited about another chicken deal at Kroger!

And this is a good deal on toilet paper!

I wanted to buy the Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes that were on sale for $1.99 — but of course the only large sized boxes (the only ones on sale) were on the very top shelf! I debated climbing the shelves, but ended up working up the courage to ask a tall guy to get them down for me. (I’m not one to ever ask for help, but it’s something I’ve been working on so this was a big victory for me!)

We also got two gallons of fresh milk from a local farm ($6/gallon). And I was excited about the riced cauliflower and refried beans mark downs!

The Chex cereal was $1.99/box with the digital coupon. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen tubs of lettuce for just $1.40!

And it’s also been a long time since I’ve found a whole chicken marked down! We’ll use it to make homemade rotisserie chicken in the crockpot!

All totaled, it was $97 for all these groceries. And we’ll see if the cereal lasts for more than a week — especially since the kids are home from school more this week as it’s midterms week! 🙂
